K2 is the second highest eight-thousander, but far more dangerous and demanding than Mount Everest. On August 1, 2008, 24 alpinists - 22 men and two women - of different nationalities set out on the ascent. A large number of them reached the summit. On the descent, disaster occurred: several climbers and the fixed ropes were torn into the depths by a block of ice, which blocked the way down for the other expedition participants. At the end of the battle, which lasted several days, K2 had claimed eleven lives - one of the most serious tragedies in the Himalayas.
