From the winner of the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade 2025: A passionate plea for a free, democratic world
Karl Schlögel has conveyed the history of Eastern Europe to a large audience in his books. But that was never enough for him. As a contemporary, he observes the upheavals since 1989 with the eye of a historian and notes the shifts in social and political power relations with seismographic flair. Even in the most inconspicuous detail of everyday life, he recognizes signs of change. Stylistically brilliant, he reported from the centers and provinces of Eastern Europe, a committed fighter for a liberal and democratic world, especially after the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. This volume collects texts from recent years that are indispensable for understanding the present.
