The men around foreman Zeke are a close-knit group: hardened miners who, day after day, risk their lives in the cramped confines of the coal mines, wresting black gold from the merciless rock for meager wages. Despite a highly suspicious incident, the team decides to descend again to protect their jobs – among them Ryan, Zeke's nephew, only eighteen years old, who reluctantly begins his first shift. Shortly afterward, a massive methane explosion triggers a chain reaction that causes the shaft to collapse. Due to neglected safety measures, no immediate help can be expected from the outside, and the situation quickly becomes dire for the few survivors: Amidst firestorms, clouds of gas, and subterranean torrents, the men desperately fight against certain death in the narrow tunnels.
