The expansion allows you to create a shadow empire and lead cursed armies that spread terror throughout the game world. The most important novelty is a new type of ruler – the Vampire. The Book of Blood Reign, on the other hand, gives you access to forgotten, corrupted magic that amplifies high-level units and can transform your faction into an ancient form of the undead. Thrones of Blood also introduces new story content. In the Lost Souls mission, you will learn the story of the victims of ancient vampires through a series of disturbing events. Heroes capable of hearing the whispers of the Lost Souls can influence their fate and bring this dark tale to an end. The expansion also offers a new storyland where you, as an ancient vampire, will embark on a journey to the birthplace of all vampires. During your quest, you can ally yourself with one of the two feuding guardians or thwart their plans to discover the legendary Crypt of the Immortal God. A new region appears on the world map – the Shadowed Lands, full of darkness and mysterious roses. In this land, you'll find new battle maps, powerful ancient wonders such as the Crimson Fan and the Rose-Choking Palace, as well as a new magical material – Blood Glass, which is crystallized blood infused with dark energy. Players can also earn the Heart of Thorns, a special zone that provides economic bonuses and expands the influence of the Shadowlands. New wildlife units appear in the game world, including Thorn Skeletons, Rose Knights, the terrifying Blood Larva, and Doomsday Bats and Squeaky Bats, which can cover the sky with their wings. The expansion also includes additional elements such as a new UI skin, new music tracks by Michiel van den Bos, a new banner icon, and an additional land template and new features.
