The Peninsular Campaign is a story expansion for Napoleon: Total War, introducing an all-new and independent campaign set in the Iberian Peninsula War of 1811–1814. It was in this conflict that the term "guerrilla" was born, describing the devastating guerrilla tactics used by Spanish insurgents against Napoleon's army. The campaign takes the player right in the middle of one of the most complex theaters of wars of the Napoleonic era. After the ambiguous results of the earlier clashes, the French try to maintain control of the region, while British, Spanish and Portuguese forces prepare a decisive counteroffensive. The support of the local population, guerrilla activities and the struggle for political influence in individual provinces play a key role.
