Clashes are difficult and deaths are frequent. You're not a hero capable of defeating everyone – choosing when to fight and when to negotiate or flee is part of the strategy. The difficulty emphasizes the harshness of the world and the consequences of ill-considered decisions. The most important feature of the game, however, is the choices and consequences. You go through it repeatedly, each time discovering new paths, tasks and points of view. A mercenary joining the Imperial Guards, a merchant plotting for the guild, a praetor working for a noble family, or an assassin performing dirty assignments – each path is practically a different game, with its own tasks and a different plot development. Many plots are intertwined, and a single passage reveals only part of the larger story. The Age of Decadence is an ambitious experiment and a conscious departure from mainstream RPG standards.
