In her chronologically first appearance, Mera escapes from the criminal Leron, who has taken control of her kingdom. When she arrives on Earth, she meets Aquaman and Aqualad, who swear to help her. Leron sets up an ambush and ties Aquaman with Mera in the Aqua Dimension. Aquaman, aided by Quisp, the spirit of the water, frees Mera and defeats Leron. The mayor renounces the throne of Xebel and returns to Atlantis, where she marries Arthur.
