A young woman, traveling through a perilous region, suddenly has a vision of a cathedral atop a hill. She longs for nothing more than the protection of Saint Cuthbert, for whose relics she and her companions seek a final resting place. The downtrodden wife of an archer hopes to find the truth within the imposing church walls. When she is once again subjected to torment by her husband, she seeks help from one of the skilled stonemasons. A professor present at Cuthbert's exhumation receives unwelcome, frightening visitors at night. A young laborer working in the cathedral encounters not only kind people but also experiences moments of hope for a better future.
