He studied law in Leipzig and Strasbourg. He spent his life working in Weimar. He traveled to the Rhine, Switzerland, Italy, and Bohemia. Early successes included the Sturm und Drang plays 'Götz von Berlichingen' and 'The Sorrows of Young Werther', poems (including exquisite love lyrics), epics, dramas ('Faust', 'Tasso', 'Iphigenia', and others), and autobiographies. He was also a draftsman and polymath, specializing in botany, morphology, mineralogy, and optics. He was a theater director and statesman.
