In Hafravatn, a lake near Reykjavík, a tourist is found dead with serious head injuries. The man was apparently murdered. Initial investigations reveal that he was the friend of a man who disappeared decades ago. When retired inspector Konrád learns of this, he prides himself and begins to investigate on his own. With the murdered man's connection to the missing person case from the 1970s, his own past catches up with him.
