December 1952: Inspector Frank Grasby's success rate leaves much to be desired. When he accidentally releases twenty of England's most valuable horses during an operation, his transfer to the tranquil village of Elderby in the North York Moors is sealed. The village lies far removed from any civilization, and the head of the police station is sound asleep when Grasby arrives. But however uneventful things may seem, the first case doesn't take long to materialize: There's been an attempted burglary at nearby Holly House, the seat of the local aristocracy.
