A bushfire on the Mornington Peninsula leaves behind smoldering eucalyptus trees, charred woodsheds - and the remains of a drug kitchen. In 1978 he received a scholarship for "Creative Writing" at Stanford University in California. After further stations in England, Italy and Africa, he devoted himself more and more to writing.
