Shortly before the end of the First World War, the people in the Ruhr area are starving. Food is scarce, the need is omnipresent. Forty boys between the ages of six and fourteen are sent to the countryside for several months with their teacher. The journey leads to Poznań in the eastern part of the German Empire. The children come to terms with the adverse conditions. But on a late summer Sunday in September, disaster begins.
