The artist Esther Ray is forced to accept a commission for a carefully designed family album of the multimillionaire Naomi Duncan, comprising several issues. These scrapbooks are intended to be a surprise gift for Naomi's husband on his sixtieth birthday. The conditions: Esther must sign a non-disclosure agreement and may only contact Naomi via the cell phone provided. Otherwise it would spoil the surprise. While Esther works her way through countless boxes of photos and scraps of memory, she comes across some inconsistencies and can less and less escape this insight into someone else's life. When Naomi finally dies under mysterious circumstances, Esther embarks on a risky search for the truth.
