Joséphine Nicolas: The House by the Sea (New Book)
Paris in the 1920s: The former art student Eileen Gray advanced to become an interior artist who was able to interpret the formal language of the time with an extraordinary flair. She is inspired by the self-confident women of the Left Bank, the literary salons of Natalie Barney and Gertrude Stein, daring nights at the side of her amour fou, the chansonnière Damia. When she meets Jean Badovici, fifteen years her junior, the visionary's life takes an abrupt turn. The architecture critic quickly grasped Eileen's talent. With calculation, he teaches them knowledge about new movements such as the Bauhaus and De Stijl. She lost her heart to Jean, against adversity, and from 1926 onwards built Villa E. 1027 for her lover on the coast near Monaco, a narrow, elongated building between lemon trees, with the azure blue sea underneath. The self-taught artist's total work of art is causing a sensation. Their creativity still amazed Le Corbusier, the master of modernism. E. 1027 becomes the backdrop, becomes the scene of envy and selfishness, of disappointment and betrayal.
