Biography (Siegfried Lenz) Siegfried Lenz, born in 1926 in Lyck (East Prussia), began studying literary history, English, and philosophy in Hamburg after the war. He then became an editor. He is considered one of Germany's most distinguished authors. From 1951 onward, Siegfried Lenz lived as a freelance writer in Hamburg. In 1988, he received the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. In 2004, he was awarded the Hannelore Greve Prize by the Hamburg Authors' Association, in 2009 he received the Lew Kopelew Prize for Peace and Human Rights, and in 2010 Siegfried Lenz was honored with the Nonino International Prize.
