In his book "Applications for a Job as a Human Being," Benjamin Maack recounts his daily life with depression, how confusing and difficult it is to live with the illness and to love his children, his girlfriend, and himself. And how it is still possible to succeed. A disarmingly honest, direct, and sometimes even funny depression diary.
When Benjamin Maack experienced another depressive episode in the spring of 2025, he started keeping a diary on Instagram. He typed it on his phone, on the sofa, in doctors' waiting rooms, before picking up his children from school. He wrote about himself, his thoughts and feelings, and his family. Through writing, he reflected on his daily life, creating a space where people could get close to his life and where he, in turn, found a connection with others. In the comments and personal messages, readers wrote to him almost daily: that his diary made them feel less alone, that the entries gave them hope and comfort, moved them to tears, but also made them laugh.
