From model student to patient? The German economy since reunification
The Federal Republic of Germany is in the midst of a 'turning point' and faces profound upheavals. Many misleading interpretations of recent economic and social history are circulating in politics and the media, from which recommendations for future action are derived. The enemies of democracy paint a bleak picture and demand radical changes.
It is therefore all the more important to take a sober look at the socio-economic developments of recent decades. The new book by renowned economic historian Hartmut Berghoff offers a fact-based assessment of the achievements and problems of the early Berlin Republic. It identifies its strengths, but also serious shortcomings. It is an irony of history that successes solidified old structures and prevented necessary new beginnings. The Federal Republic became a land of contradictions. "Deceptive Prosperity" is the first economic-historical analysis of the history of the Berlin Republic from reunification to the present day.
