In recent years, many voices have been raised questioning our current ideal of motherhood. Nevertheless, unconditional maternal love is still in the foreground and is considered a motivation and reward for care work and an excuse for inequality. Maternal feelings are synonymous with a single feeling that has blocked the factual view of motherhood for over three hundred years and is currently gaining momentum again in right-wing conservative ideologies. It is time to redefine the feelings of parents and to break up the narrative of the ever-happy mother and to explain how many different and complex emotions are part of motherhood - which of course also include, but not only, love and happiness.
