Product description

The year is 1291. The cantons of Uri, Schwyz, and Unterwalden pledge mutual assistance in times of external threat in the Federal Charter – the birth of Switzerland. In 1970, Asterix creators Goscinny and Uderzo send the Gaul to the Helvetii in one of the classic adventures. Two extraordinary events, commemorated in 2025 with a deluxe edition marking their 734th and 55th anniversaries respectively: the story in a large format, supplemented by Uderzo's original drawings and extensive editorial content.

Biography (Albert Uderzo) Albert Uderzo, born in 1927, became an assistant illustrator at a Parisian publishing house in 1941. In 1945, he helped produce an animated film for the first time, and a year later he drew his first comic strips, became a screenwriter, and soon began creating self-contained comic series. During this time, he created, among other works, "Belloy, Knight Without Armor" (for the magazine OK) and "Crime Doesn't Pay" (for the newspaper France-Soir). Uderzo became an employee of a Belgian agency in Paris, where he met Jean-Michel Charlier and René Goscinny in 1951. With Charlier, Uderzo created "Belloy," "Tanguy," and "Laverdure," and with Goscinny, he initially produced, among others, "Pitt Pistol" and "The Incredible Corsair," followed by "Luc Junior" (for La Libre Belgique), "Benjamin and Benjamine" (for "Top Magazin"), and "Oumpah-Pah" (for "Tintin"). In 1959, Uderzo and Goscinny founded their own magazine, called "Pilot." The crowning achievement of their collaborations was the creation of "Asterix the Gaul."

In June 2004, Albert Uderzo received the Max and Moritz Prize from the Erlangen Comic Salon for his outstanding lifetime achievement. Biography (René Goscinny): René Goscinny, born in Paris in 1926, grew up in Buenos Aires and, after graduating from high school, first worked as an assistant bookkeeper and later as an illustrator in an advertising agency. In 1945, Goscinny emigrated to New York. In 1946, he had to return to France to complete his military service. Back in the USA, he worked again as an illustrator, then as art director for a children's book publisher. During a trip to France, Goscinny was hired by a Franco-Belgian press agency, which sent him to New York twice as a correspondent. He gave up drawing and began writing. He created numerous humorous articles, books, and scripts for comics. René Goscinny died in 1977.
