WHEN FEAR BURNS There are many swamp monsters. But none is like Man-Thing Ted Sallis. Neither fully plant nor animal, it guards the nexus of all realities. By nature neither good nor evil, and magically drawn to injustice, the mere sight of this grotesque creature fills most people with panic. But those who fear it risk being engulfed in flames.

WHEN FEAR TAKES ROOTS For over 50 years, Man-Thing has roamed the Florida Everglades as a swamp monster. Wherever he appears, he spreads fear and terror. But behind his grotesque exterior lies a scientist. Whether alongside heroes like Spider-Man, the Thing, and the Hulk, or magicians like Dr. Strange who rely on Man-Thing's help, or in league with higher entities like the Collector and baby-eating demon lords who seek to exploit the monster for their own purposes, in Ted Sallis's complex world, hardly anything is as it first appears. Although largely devoid of emotions, logic, and human reason, the monstrous creature is able to perceive the feelings of others through finely tuned sensors. Above all, fear and injustice are the driving forces behind his actions. Combined with a host of morbid villains - such as the insane Foolkiller, the mysterious D'Spayre and Wundarr - the concoction is like a powder keg for crude, unpredictable developments.

Known almost exclusively to die-hard Marvel fans in German-speaking countries, the adventures of Man-Thing have long enjoyed cult status overseas. Conceived by Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, and Gerry Conway, and brought to life by Steve Gerber, the character has been brought to life over the years by numerous legends of the ninth art – including the greats Gray Morrow, Neal Adams, John Buscema, Howard Chaykin, Mike Ploog, Val Mayerik, John Byrne, Pat Broderick, Tom Sutton, Alfredo Alcala, Ed Hannigan, Sal Buscema, and Jim Mooney. Some writers liked the stories so much that they immortalized themselves in them.

But beware: This book is not light reading. Those who find the fate of this macabre creature and its world unsettling are in danger. For, as its principal creator, Steve Gerber, was fond of warning: "Those who know fear burn at the touch of Man-Things."
