Patrick Chappatte: Censorship in America Comic Book New
In 2019, the 'New York Times' discontinued its award-winning political cartoons and fired cartoonist Patrick Chappatte. As a pretext for this step, the scandal was about a satirical portrayal of Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu (which Chappatte had not written at all and against which he spoke out publicly). Six years later, in January 2025, Pulitzer Prize winner Ann Telnaes quit her job at the Washington Post. The newspaper had previously refused to publish a caricature it had designed in which Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos kneels in front of Donald Trump. The disturbing pattern is clear: both authors were victims of censorship in America. In this graphic novel, they present a selection of their cartoons and comment on their backgrounds. The resulting conversation in words and pictures is an astute debate about the status quo of American journalism and the importance of cartoon art as part of democracy - hilarious and terrifying at the same time.
