Like a hermit, the charismatic rancher Einar (Robert Redford) lives a solitary life in beautiful Wyoming with his old friend Mitch (Morgan Freeman) and a few animals. Years ago, his son died in an accident, and Einar blames his daughter-in-law Jean (Jennifer Lopez). One day, Jean arrives at his ranch in despair. Her new lover has threatened her and her daughter Griff, Einar's granddaughter. Einar initially shows his daughter-in-law only contempt. But he hadn't reckoned with Griff: The little girl approaches her grandfather completely unselfconsciously, changing not only his daily routine but also his heart.
