Capernaum - City of Hope DVD New
Zain is just twelve years old. At least, that's his estimated age. The boy has no papers, and his family doesn't even know exactly when he was born. Now he's in court, suing his parents for bringing him into the world when they can't care for him. He tells the judge his moving story: what happened after he ran away from home and found shelter with a young Ethiopian mother, and how he ended up penniless and alone, struggling through the slums of Beirut with her baby. A child is accusing his parents, and with them, an entire society that allows such stories to happen. "Capernaum" is a term of biblical origin that has become established, particularly in Arabic and French, as an image for a place of chaos and disorder. Lebanese director Nadine Labaki depicts just such a place in her highly emotional fable. In visually stunning cinematic images, CAPERNAUM - CITY OF HOPE tells the story of the perilous lives of those who dream of a better life but have no chance in our world. Nadine Labaki's compelling direction exposes the mechanisms of incredible social injustice and gives a voice to those who live in the shadows, often without identification papers or employment opportunities. A film of great empathy and humanity.
