Jean is a composer, his wife Helena a pianist. They can't live off their music, let alone support their daughter. Then their landlady Klara waives their rent, quits her job, and moves into the rooftop apartment. A radical step that proves to be a catalyst for Jean's creativity and Helena's social activism. Soon, the house becomes the vibrant epicenter of a city-wide quest for meaning. But as the discussions about the meaning of life grow louder, Klara withdraws further and further into herself—until she discovers a miraculous solution to the never-ending chaos.
Chaos and Silence revolves around Klara, who withdraws from the outside world into inner stillness without explanation. Her actions increasingly throw people off balance. Klara becomes a projection screen for their unconscious longings and fears. The film portrays a society in a crisis of meaning: the existential loneliness of its people and their yearning for healing.
