India, early 20th century: Devdas Mukherjee, son of a wealthy zamindar family, returns home after ten years. He is greeted effusively. But Devdas only has eyes for the beautiful neighbor's daughter Parvati, called Paro. The two have had some intimate but unspoken love since childhood - to the horror of Devda's parents: Paro comes from a family of court dancers. A relationship between the two would damage the reputation of the Mukherjee family. A perfidious game of intrigue unfolds that is supposed to divide Devdas and Paro forever.
