Assistant director Adam and aspiring doctor Emma have known each other since childhood. Both have had little luck with relationships in the past, and after Adam is dumped by his ex, he ends up in bed with Emma almost by chance. They agree to a casual relationship without emotional commitment or responsibility. On Valentine's Day, however, Adam works up the courage to confess his love to Emma. She wants nothing to do with it. Adam is deeply hurt and breaks off contact. Only much later does Emma realize that she, too, has developed feelings for Adam.
