David Boothe, a reporter from Chicago, has an assignment at the Hoover Dam. Together with his wife Joan, he spends the night in a hotel in Las Vegas not far away. While Boothe is busy with his work, the owner of the casino, Corrigan, introduces the bored Joan to gambling with a few gifted chips. She quickly falls into a real gambling frenzy, she gambles away David's expenses and pawns her camera. But that doesn't stop her from continuing to gamble, and despite David's attempts to counteract this, she slips deeper and deeper into gambling addiction.

Als auch noch ihre neurotische, manipulative Schwester Ruth in Las Vegas auftaucht, beschließt David resignierend, seine Frau zu verlassen, und reist ab. Joan steht nun komplett unter den Einfluss Corrigans und bewegt sich nur noch im zwielichtigen Spielermilieu. Als sie schließlich selbstmordgefährdet im Krankenhaus landet, besinnt sich David und setzt nun alles daran, Joan von ihrer Spielsucht zu befreien und seine Ehe doch noch zu retten.
