Mid-19th century: Unemployed mechanic Étienne Lantier finds work in the coalfields of northern France, but the job becomes a living hell for him. Working conditions are inhumane, the miners slaves of the industrial age. They toil for miserable wages, are addicted to alcohol, and morally deteriorate. When the mine owners try to impose wage cuts, Étienne leads a strike, which is brutally suppressed.
