John (Jack Reynor) lives with his alcoholic mother, Jean (Toni Collette), in a council flat in Dublin, Ireland, and ekes out a meager living as a taxi driver. One morning, when he returns home from his shift, he finds his mother unresponsive, unconscious from yet another alcohol overdose. Jean vehemently rejects John's attempts to help her and his efforts to reunite the family. After she ends up in the hospital again, her last hope for recovery is a private rehabilitation clinic. However, since she has neither insurance nor money, John is forced to find the necessary funds through other means and begins to move in criminal circles.
