The USA in the 1930s. The warm-hearted Dr. Wilbur Larch runs an orphanage in St. Cloud's. The childless doctor gradually develops a deep father-son relationship with the orphan, Homer Wells. Larch teaches him everything he needs to know about medicine. But the doctor's strong personality places high demands on the boy.
