The story of Louisiana is told from the perspective of Virginia Tregan, who returns to her homeland in the mid-19th century after completing her studies in Paris. Following her father's death, she discovers she is penniless. To secure the family estate, she marries the wealthy plantation owner Adrien Damvillier – even though her heart belongs to the estate manager, Dandridge. Despite the turmoil of war, painful losses, and intrigues surrounding her inheritance, Virginia continues to fight steadfastly for her family and her home. This lavish historical epic is a Franco-Canadian co-production directed by Philippe de Broca and based on the novels by Maurice Denuzière. The film blends classic Southern romance with the narrative scope of grand family sagas like "North & South." Filming took place, among other locations, at Nottoway Plantation, which was originally intended as a filming location for "Gone with the Wind." The evocative score was composed by Claude Bolling.
