Raimund Gregorius (Jeremy Irons), a Latin teacher and classical linguist at a high school, encounters a young Portuguese woman on a bridge in Bern. As she is about to throw herself into the icy water, he manages to grab hold of her and save her. But shortly afterward, the woman disappears, leaving behind only her jacket containing a book by the Portuguese physician Amadeu de Prado. By chance, Gregorius discovers a train ticket inside the book and spontaneously decides to use it. He embarks on an adventurous journey to Lisbon. In his search for the author, Gregorius stumbles upon pieces of a high-stakes puzzle, rife with political and emotional intrigue.
