Marjane is eight years old when the mullahs drive the Shah out of Persia and seize power. The world is suddenly a different place. But the rebellious Marjane has no intention of submitting to the strict new rules. She much prefers discovering punk, ABBA, and Iron Maiden, and having her first experiences with boys. Little does she know that her playful protest is dangerous—not only for herself, but also for her family.
The film is based on the equally acclaimed graphic novel, and was directed by the author Marjane Satrapi herself. This unconventional animated film about the director's childhood and youth in Iran during and after the revolution won, among other awards, the Jury Prize at Cannes. In the German dubbed version, Marjane is voiced by Jasmin Tabatabai.
