France in the summer of 1940 during the German occupation: Young Lucile Angellier lives under the watchful eye of her domineering mother-in-law, Madame Angellier. Her husband is at war, and both women await news of him. Lucile's only joy is playing the piano. Her life changes dramatically when Parisian refugees arrive in the village—soon followed by a German regiment stationed in the small town. Many residents are forced to take in soldiers. The German officer Bruno von Falk is billeted in the Angellier family home. While Lucile tries to ignore the attractive and cultured Bruno, she hides the fugitive farmer Benoit, who killed his German houseguest Kurt Bonnet in self-defense, from the occupiers. But soon, Lucile and Bruno grow closer through their shared passion for music.
