Robert de Niro plays a distraught Vietnam veteran who now works as a night shift taxi driver in New York. The much dirt, brutality and inhumanity he experienced made him a loner. Difficulties in everyday life and his forbidden relationship with a 14-year-old prostitute leave him only one way out: violence. The climax of the film is one of the strongest and at the same time most gruesome scenes in film history.
