Upper Austria, mid-18th century: A carp pond reflects the gray of the sky. A deep, dark forest swallows the sunlight. On a hill, an executed woman is displayed. As an example. As a warning. An omen? The deeply religious and highly sensitive Agnes regards the dead woman with pity. And also with longing, for she feels alienated in the emotionally cold world of her husband Wolf, into which she has just married. Agnes withdraws more and more, her melancholy growing ever more oppressive. Soon, an act of violence seems to her the only way out.

The celebrated genre specialists Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala present DES TEUFELS BAD, a powerful work about a previously unexplored chapter of European history, and also paint a universal picture of society's treatment of outsiders and taboos. At the Berlinale, cinematographer Martin Gschlacht was awarded the Silver Bear for outstanding artistic achievement: His archaic images characterize this exceptional cinematic phenomenon as much as the outstanding acting performance of Anja Plaschg, who also composed the film score as Soap&Skin.
