The Ruhr area in the summer of 1954: After ten long years, Richard Lubanski returns from Soviet captivity - and no longer understands the world. His wife Christa has self-confidently supported the family, his adult children lead their own lives. His youngest Matthias is only enthusiastic about football stars - above all Helmut Rahn. While Lubanski is fighting for a place in a world that has become alien to him, the world's best football teams will meet at the World Cup in Switzerland.
