Andrei Tarkovsky called his fourth film a confession. In associative form, it tells an autobiographical story that begins in 1930 and extends into the 1970s. The protagonist is a man in his forties who wants to take stock of his life so far. Three episodes are shown side by side: the first contains childhood memories, the second chronicles of historical events, the third philosophical reflections that form a synthesis of what is shown.
