John Trent, an expert in insurance fraud, is given the task of searching for the writer Sutter Cane, whose horror novels have been topping America's bestseller lists for months. In search of Cane, Trent gets caught up in a maelstrom of mysterious events that thoroughly unhinge his rational view of the world. He has to realize that Cane's visions are becoming reality and humanity is threatened with a violent end.
