In the year of our Lord 1327, during the last week of November, at a wealthy Benedictine abbey on the slopes of the Apennines, Brother William of Baskerville, a learned Franciscan from England, arrives as the Emperor's special envoy on a delicate mission: to organize a highly political meeting between the Franciscan friars, suspected of heresy, and representatives of the Pope.
But his stay at the abbey soon turns into an apocalyptic time of terror. William and his assistant Adson witness the most wondrous and, for an abbey, highly unusual events and deaths. William is gripped by investigative fervor: far more than the conflict between the emperor and the pope, he is interested in unmasking the murderer, and in doing so, he delves ever deeper into the secrets of the abbey. And he must hurry: his worst enemy, Bernardo Gui, a merciless witch and heretic hunter, suspects the devil is behind the incidents and has quickly found his scapegoats...
