Miriam lives with her friend Ida for a few months and goes to the Winterstein School with her during this time. She knows nothing about the magical community. But on her first day at school, Mr. Morrison hands over two new magical animals to the class: Max receives the owl Muriel and, to Miriam's great amazement, she gets the energetic tarsier Fitzgeraldo. Muriel quickly realizes that Max may feel more for his best friend Leonie than he thinks. Miriam confides in Fitzgeraldo that she was the outsider at her old school.
