Burt Lancaster plays a former prisoner of war who lives alone and withdrawn in England. His experiences have made him an emotionally unstable person who is prone to violence. But then a kind-hearted nurse falls in love with him and hopes that her love will make him a more peaceful person again and that he won't get further and further on the wrong track.
