While his debut album laid the foundation for a raw, minimalist interpretation of rockabilly and blues, "Collision Drive" expands the palette with a rougher, more layered, and unfiltered energy. Here, Vega's lyrics address universal themes rooted in his fascination with street life, science fiction, politics, comics, love, and the mysteries of the universe. "Collision Drive" dispensed with drum machines in favor of a live drummer and brought in a hard rock band for backing, offering a different perspective on Vega's artistic vision. The painful punk rockabilly of "Magdalena 82" unfolds with a hypnotic blend of guitar slides and frenetic energy, while Vega's cover of "Be Bop a Lula" transforms Gene Vincent's classic into an aggressively charged, manic wail. Other tracks, like the driving cosmic rock 'n' roll of "Raver," venture into psychobilly territory. Relentlessly innovative, Vega constantly explored new avenues. Here, we witness his complete ascent into his own mythology: part rockabilly outlaw, part cosmic preacher, part visionary misfit.

Remastered by Josh Bonati from the original tapes, "Collision Drive" is now being released in a reverential reissue on Sacred Bones.
