Product description

The fierce and powerful Downtown Boys will release »Public Luxury«, their incredible new album and the follow-up to their acclaimed sub-pop debut, »Cost of Living«, in June 2026. The band's fourth album is a rousing, joyful fusion of sounds. Anthemic punk and indie rock mix with Latin American traditions, drum machines merge with acoustic drums, saxophones accompany the riffs and synthesizer layers provide sonic accents from New Wave to Industrial. The highlights are »The City Begins«, »Sirena«, »Viva La Rosa«, »You're a Ghost«, the title song and the pre-release track, the massive »No Me Jodas«. Since its founding, the Downtown Boys have tirelessly developed as an artistic and political project. Vocalist Victoria Marie and guitarist/vocalist Joey La Neve DeFrancesco met at union meetings while working together at a hotel in Providence, Rhode Island, and wrote many of the band's early songs about union work and exploitative working conditions. The quintet is completed by Joe DeGeorge (saxophone/synthesizer), Mary Jane Regalado (bass) and Joey Doubek (drums). Through years of touring and three acclaimed albums, the Downtown Boys have continued to grow as artists, musicians and organizers. Now, with »Public Luxury«, the band presents a captivating album that puts politics at the center and at the same time produces the band's most haunting and powerful sound to date. The definition of »Public Luxury« largely coincides with the title of the Downtown Boys' second LP, »Full Communism«. To put it simply, "public luxury" means: "everything for everyone". It is the stubborn insistence that a better world is possible, with full awareness of the horrors we experience every day and the individual and collective responsibility to resist the nihilism and hopelessness we all feel. Feelings like "everything for everyone" and "we'll have it all" perfectly represent the cathartic, communal live experience that this group of multi-instrumentalists creates. These feelings also embody the inclusive, joyful sonic fusion that defines the album: anthemic punk and indie rock mix with Latin American traditions, drum machines merge with acoustic drums, saxophones underline riffs, and synth layers provide embellishments ranging from new wave to industrial. The range that »Public Luxury« covers cannot be overestimated, and yet the album feels absolutely alive and coherent. »Public Luxury« is a return to the band's past in the service of their future. It was produced by DeFrancesco together with sound engineer and long-time Downtown Boys supporter Seth Manchester (Lambrini Girls, Lightning Bolt, Model/Actriz) at the studio and art space »Machines With Magnets« in Pawtucket, Rhode Island – not far from Providence, Rhode Island, the band's first home. Victoria Marie's grandmother – a formative figure for the band throughout its existence – passed away in May 2025, and her influence strongly shapes the album; the songs "No Me Jodas" and "Sirena" are crystal-clear depictions of the love between a woman and her ancestor. Beyond the loss, anger and frustration of the present, Public Luxury boldly points to a vibrant, open-hearted vision of both music and the world: "Our music is simply for anyone and everyone who believes in the new future we can shape together," explains Victoria Marie. "A world that will be clumsy and contradictory, but truly free in everything that really matters."
