Downward - Smart Bomb CD Frank Z. New
Founded in Hamburg in the late 1970s by singer and guitarist Frank Z., Abwärts quickly rose to prominence as influential figures in the German punk, wave, and experimental music scene with their legendary festival performance at Hamburg's Markthalle ("In Die Zukunft" / 1979) and the release of their "Computerstaat" EP and debut album "Amok Koma" (both 1980). Since then, in addition to numerous singles and EPs, they have released twelve full-length albums, collaborating with producers such as Nick Launay (Nick Cave), Jon Caffery (Die Toten Hosen), and Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica). After Abwärts had already released a new version of their cult single "Computerstaat" in the spring, now (four years after their last successful album "Krautrock") a new musical statement from the group consisting of singer Frank Z., guitarist Rodrigo Gonzalez, bassist Björn Werra and drummer Martin Kessler is finally released with "Smart Bomb". Technically extremely straightforward, the production by Rod Gonzalez and Frank Z. showcases the band's playful peak performance on their new album, delivering eleven extremely powerful, punk-infused rock songs of a (mostly) hard-melodic nature – including a cover version of the Andrew Sisters classic "Rum & Coca Cola" – accompanied by Frank Z.'s characteristically biting and sarcastic lyrics.
