Eva Cassidy was known for her powerful, soulful soprano voice and her unique interpretations of jazz, folk, and blues music. The American singer and guitarist died in 1996 at the young age of 33. Two years after her death, in 1998, the compilation album "Songbird" was released, a special best-of and a beautiful tribute to the artist and her work. At that time, however, she was virtually unknown in the UK, and the album only reached the lower ranks of the British charts. Two years after its release, however, the British public became aware of Cassidy's music when her versions of Sting's "Fields of Gold" and the film score classic "Over the Rainbow" were played on BBC Radio 2. Shortly afterward, "Songbird" reached number one in the UK. The album contains ten songs. The song "Over The Rainbow" is from Cassidy's 1992 album "The Other Side." The four tracks "Fields Of Gold," "Autumn Leaves," "People Get Ready," and "Oh Had IA Golden Thread" are from her 1996 album "Live At Blues Alley." Five tracks—"Wade In The Water," "Wayfaring Stranger," "Songbird," "Time Is A Healer," and "I Know You By Heart"—are from "Eva By Heart" (1997). Eva Cassidy's unprecedented posthumous recording career began with the release of the "Songbird" album in early 1998. Twenty years and five million sales later, "Songbird" remains the top album in Eva Cassidy's catalog, which now comprises eleven albums. Eva belongs to the exclusive club of only eleven female artists to have ever achieved ten or more UK Gold albums. This special "Songbird 20" anniversary edition features Eva's most popular songs, including "Fields of Gold," "Over the Rainbow," "Songbird," and "Autumn Leaves." Alongside the ten newly remastered recordings from the original album are four alternative acoustic solo performances by Eva of songs from the Songbird album. These solo performances were first heard on the Simply Eva album, having surfaced long after the release of the original Songbird.
