The group was formed in 1991 by vocalist Brandon Boyd, lead guitarist Mike Alleiner, and drummer José Pasillas, when they were still students at Calabasas High School. Later, the line-up was expanded to include bassist Alex "Dirk Lance" Katunich and Gavin "DJ Lyfe" Koppel. Both were eventually replaced, with Ben Kenney taking over on bass and DJ Kilmore becoming the band's turntablist. In 2024, Nicole Row replaced Kenney on bass. The sound of Incubus is described as a mixture of rap metal, funk, jazz and post-grunge, often incorporating elements of hip-hop. This eclectic style helped them become one of the most popular alternative metal bands of the early 2000s. The band has achieved considerable commercial success, going multi-platinum and producing several hit singles.
