John Campbell: One Believer (180g) (Limited Numbered Edition) (Translucent Blue Vinyl) LP Neu
"One Believer," the Elektra debut of the late bluesman John Campbell, stood virtually outside of any trend at the major labels and in pop music at the time. Apart from Chris Whitley's "Living with the Law," it was the only roots album released on a major label in 1991. A deeply atmospheric album full of subtly shimmering organs and warm guitar textures that emphasize the dreamy, ghostly side of the blues more than the crisp stomp and roll for which Campbell was known in the clubs and which he presented on its successor, "Howlin' Mercy." Tracks like "Angel of Sorrow," "World of Trouble," and "Wild Streak" offer shimmering ambient textures from which the blues seems to seep out of the ether. Campbell lived and worked in New York, and his music was certainly influenced by this nocturnal environment. These are beautiful songs that revel in shadows and restraint, baring their teeth at just the right moments. The magic of the roadhouse unfolds in "Couldn't Do Nothin'," "Devil In My Closet," and "Person to Person." The album's final two tracks, "Take Me Down" and the title track, are menacing in their conviction and eerily swampy in their execution. "One Believer" is available in a limited edition of 750 individually numbered copies on translucent blue vinyl and includes an insert. LP 2026 New
