"Get Sunk" is an ode to infinity. It brings blurred, brushstroke-like memories to the surface, accumulating into a heap of colors and connections that extends beyond individuality into endless change. Underwater, everything moves in slow motion, and Matt Berninger saw his creative voice slip away with the current.
But sometimes we need to drown to remember how to breathe. "Get Sunk" is that cleansing inhalation. It's the sight of your undulating reflection in the water and the realization that you're not yourself without a thousand others: parents, friends, siblings, spouses and exes, college roommates, childhood best friends, cousins, even strangers—all of them make up the mind of the narrator of "Get Sunk." Berninger wanted to figure out why he loves what he does, and it's the collaborative spirit of the album and its relaxed, unfolding attitude that made Berninger look up and feel the warmth on his face. When we sink into ourselves, we often find that we're actually swimming with others.
